Microsoft SQL Server MCP server

by wenerme

Ask your AI questions about your SQL Server database and get answers, tables, and reports back.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to a Microsoft SQL Server database. Once it is set up, you can ask questions in normal words and the AI will look up the data for you. It is handy for anyone who has data in SQL Server but does not want to write database queries by hand.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another app. This one connects your AI to a Microsoft SQL Server database, so the AI can look up tables and run queries there when you ask. You stay in the chat; the helper does the talking to the database.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question in plain words, like which customers bought the most last month. The AI uses this helper to look at your database, see which tables exist, and write a query. The helper runs that query against your SQL Server and sends the results back. The AI then explains the numbers or turns them into a small report for you in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • List the tables in your database
  • Browse the contents of a table (top 100 rows)
  • Run a query and get results as a table or as CSV
  • Ask for summaries like totals, averages, or counts
  • Find records from a certain time period
  • Check which version of SQL Server you are connected to
  • Work in read-only mode so nothing in the database can be changed

Try asking your AI

  • “What tables are available in this database?”
  • “Show me the top 10 customers by total sales.”
  • “Find all orders placed in the last 30 days.”
  • “Create a summary report of inventory levels by category.”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat: lists of tables, rows of data, counts, totals, or short summaries the AI writes from the results. Query results can come back as a table or as CSV text you can copy. If you asked for a report, the AI explains the numbers in normal words.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Microsoft SQL Server database you can reach (local, LocalDB, or Azure SQL)
  • The server address, database name, and a username and password (or Windows login)
  • Node.js installed on your computer so the npx command works
  • The Claude desktop app, if you want to use it there

Good to know

In the default readwrite mode the AI can change or delete data, so use readonly mode on any database you care about.

Install it with your AI

Add Microsoft SQL Server MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Microsoft SQL Server MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
