Gmail MCP server
by A1-x-Tech
Let your AI read, search, draft and send your Gmail, and keep labels and trash tidy, from the chat.
This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to your Gmail mailbox. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI in plain words to find an email, sum up a long thread, or write a reply for you. It is handy for anyone who lives in their inbox all day and wants help triaging, writing, and staying organized.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot see your inbox unless something gives it permission to. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill, here a connection to Gmail, so it can look up your messages and act on them when you ask. You stay in charge: the AI shows what it wants to do, and in most apps asks you to confirm before anything is sent or changed.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question about your mail, like "what is unread this week". The AI passes that request to this helper, which talks to your Gmail account through Google's official Gmail connection. Gmail sends back the matching messages, and the helper hands your AI the senders, subjects, dates, and short snippets. Your AI turns that into a clean answer in your chat. When you ask it to write or change something, the helper carries that out too, and shows you the result.
What you can do with it
- Search your inbox with normal questions like "unread from this week" or "from Acme about the contract"
- Read a whole email thread and get a short summary in the chat
- Write a reply as a draft so you can review it before sending
- Send an email or a draft to real people once you say it is ready
- Create labels and apply or remove them on messages
- Mark messages read, starred, or archived
- Move messages to the trash and bring them back if you change your mind
Try asking your AI
- “Show my unread emails from the last week and tell me which ones need a reply”
- “Find the thread with Acme about the contract and summarize it from oldest to newest”
- “Draft a reply to the latest message saying the signed copy goes out Friday”
- “Create a label called Receipts 2026 and apply it to messages with invoices”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in your chat: lists of emails with senders, subjects, dates and short snippets, or a summary of a long thread. When it writes or changes something, you see the draft text or a short note about what it did, like "label applied" or "message moved to trash". If it sends an email, it tells you it was sent. Long email bodies are shortened so they do not flood the chat, and attachments come back as names and sizes only.
Before you start
What you need
- The Claude desktop app, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, or another app that supports MCP servers
- A Google account with Gmail
- Node.js 20 or newer on your computer
- A Google Cloud OAuth client for Gmail (the server walks you through creating one)
Good to know
Sending an email cannot be undone and deleting a draft or a label is permanent, so let your AI show you the draft and confirm before anything goes out or gets removed.
Install it with your AI
Add Gmail MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Gmail MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,210 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who handles a busy inbox, like an office worker, an assistant, a founder, or a small team lead who wants help reading, writing, and organizing email.
