arXiv MCP server
by andybrandt
Lets your AI search arXiv for research papers and pull up their details and full text.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to arXiv, the giant free library of research papers. Once it is set up, you can just ask your AI in normal words to find papers on a topic, and it will go look them up for you. It is handy for anyone who reads or writes about research but does not want to click around the arXiv website by hand.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a little helper program that gives your AI one new skill, in this case the ability to talk to arXiv. When you ask a question, your AI passes it to this helper, the helper asks arXiv, and the answer comes back into your chat. You do not have to understand how it works, you just get the results.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like find recent papers about a topic. The AI sends that request to this helper, and the helper searches arXiv for matching papers. It can narrow the search by date, sort the results by newest or by relevance, and tell you how many papers matched in total. Then it hands back a tidy list with titles, authors, dates, and short abstract previews. If you want more on one paper, the AI can fetch its full details or even the full text.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Search arXiv for papers by title and abstract words
- Limit results to a date range, like last 6 months or a specific year
- Sort results by submission date, update date, or relevance
- See the total number of matching papers to judge how broad a search is
- Get details for a specific paper using its arXiv ID
- Read the full paper text as Markdown, converted from the PDF
- Find links to the PDF or HTML version of a paper
- Browse and search arXiv subject categories
Try asking your AI
- “Search arXiv for recent papers about large language models”
- “Find papers about quantum computing published in 2024”
- “Show me the details for paper 2103.08220”
- “Search arXiv for papers about transformers, sorted by relevance”
What it gives back to you
You get answers right in the chat, not files to download. A search gives you a short list of papers with titles, authors, arXiv IDs, categories, dates, and an abstract preview, plus a note like Found 15,234 total results, showing first 10. Asking about one paper gives you its full title, authors, dates, journal reference if there is one, the abstract, and links to the PDF or HTML. You can also ask for the full text of a paper and get it back as readable Markdown.
Before you start
What you need
- An AI app that supports MCP servers, like Claude Desktop
- Python installed on your computer if you run it locally
- Nothing extra if you use the ready-made web version
Good to know
The server follows arXiv's rules and only allows about one request every 3 seconds, so big batches of searches may feel slow.
Install it with your AI
Add arXiv MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check arXiv MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Students, researchers, and anyone who reads or writes about science and wants to find papers without browsing arXiv by hand.
