Backlog MCP server

by backloghq

Gives your AI a to-do list that remembers tasks between chats, so work carries over.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Add a task to fix the login bug, due Friday”, on your own computer the Backlog MCP server works with your task file, and you get back your tasks, still there tomorrow.

Backlog is a small helper that gives your AI a memory for tasks. Instead of losing your to-do list when the chat ends, your AI keeps a running backlog you can come back to later. It is handy if you use Claude Code for real projects and want tasks to survive from one session to the next.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It forgets everything the moment you close the window. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something outside the chat. This one connects your AI to a task list stored on your own computer, so it can add, find, and update tasks for you whenever you ask.

What this MCP server does

You tell your AI what you want, like add a task or show me what is pending. Your AI passes that request to this helper program. The helper reads and writes a small task file on your computer, keeping each project's tasks separate. Then it sends the answer back, and your AI shows it to you in the chat. Because the tasks live in a file, they are still there tomorrow, next week, or whenever you open a new session.

What you can do with it

  • Add new tasks with priorities, due dates, and tags
  • List pending, active, blocked, or overdue tasks
  • Mark tasks as started, done, or stopped
  • Attach a written spec or notes to a task
  • Group tasks by project or by tag
  • Undo your last change if you make a mistake
  • Archive old finished tasks to keep the list tidy

Try asking your AI

  • “Add a task to fix the login bug, high priority, due Friday”
  • “Show me everything pending in the backend project”
  • “What is overdue right now?”
  • “Write a short spec for task 3 and attach it”

What it gives back to you

You get back plain answers in the chat: lists of tasks with their status, priority, and due date, or counts like you have 4 pending tasks. When you ask for one task, it shows the full details including any notes or spec you attached. When you add or change something, it confirms what it did. Everything stays in your own task file, not on someone else's server.

Before you start

What you need

  • Claude Code (the plugin is built for it)
  • Node.js installed if you run the standalone version
  • A folder on your computer where the task data can live

Good to know

Some actions like purging a task or deleting a document cannot be undone, so double-check before you ask for them.

Install it with your AI
