GEML MCP server
by geml-spec
Your AI can edit one section of a document by name instead of rewriting the whole file.
GEML is a text format and a small tool that lets you point at one named section of a document and work with just that part. This MCP server connects that tool to your AI, so when you ask for a change, only the section you named gets read or written. It is handy if you or your AI keep editing long Markdown files and you are tired of the whole file being copied around.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill, here the ability to work with GEML and Markdown documents section by section. Once it is connected, your AI can ask this helper to list the sections in a file, read one, change one, or add a new one. You stay in the chat, and the helper does the actual file work on your computer.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI for something in plain words, like tightening the intro of a file or looking up one section. The AI uses this helper to find the section by its name or address. The helper reads or writes only that part, and it re-checks the whole document after every change. If the change would break the document, it is refused before it lands. You then get back the section you asked for, or a short note that the change was made. It can also answer questions about how pieces of code call each other in a project.
What you can do with it
- List every section in a Markdown file as a named address
- Read one section instead of the whole file
- Write a new version of one section back into the file
- Rename, add, or delete a single section
- Find which section holds a piece of text and replace just that text
- Save a revision and roll one section back if you change your mind
- Ask which parts of a codebase call which functions
Try asking your AI
- “List all the sections in README.md so I can see what is there”
- “Show me just the key features section of README.md”
- “Tighten the intro section of README.md and save it as a new revision”
- “What calls the function that parses a document in this project”
What it gives back to you
You get back the section you asked for, shown as plain text in the chat. When it changes something, you get a short confirmation that the write went through, or a clear message if it was refused. Listing a file gives you a tidy list of section names. History commands give you a list of saved revisions, and rolling back shows the restored section.
Before you start
What you need
- The GEML tool installed on your computer
- The Claude desktop app or another AI app that supports MCP servers
- Markdown files you want to work with, kept on the same computer
Good to know
It can change and delete parts of your documents, so keep backups or use its history feature before asking it to make big edits.
Install it with your AI
Add GEML MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check GEML MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Writers, editors, and developers who work with long Markdown docs or codebases and want their AI to change one part at a time.
