Google Drive MCP server
by isaacphi
Lets your AI search and read your Google Drive files and read or edit your Google Sheets.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to your Google Drive. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to find a file, read it, or look at a spreadsheet, and it will go and fetch the answer for you. It is handy if you keep a lot of your work in Drive and Sheets and want to ask questions about it in plain words.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app. This one connects your AI to Google Drive, so it can look up your files and spreadsheets when you ask. You stay in the chat and the helper does the running around.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like find my budget spreadsheet or read this document. Your AI passes that request to this helper program. The helper talks to Google Drive using your Google account and your permission. Google Drive sends back the file names, the file contents, or the spreadsheet data. Your AI then shows you the result right in the chat.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Search your Google Drive for files by name or type
- Read the contents of a document, PDF, or other file
- Read data from a Google Sheet, whole or just a range
- Update a single cell in a Google Sheet
- List files that match a search so you can pick one
- Pull a Google Doc into the chat as readable text
Try asking your AI
- “Search my Google Drive for anything with the word invoice in the name”
- “Read the file called Q3 planning notes and summarise it for me”
- “Show me the first ten rows of my budget spreadsheet”
- “Update cell B2 in my sales sheet to 1500”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat, not files on your computer. For a search, you get a list of file names and types. For a read, you get the contents of the file, with Google Docs turned into text, Sheets turned into table data, and Slides turned into plain text. For an edit, you get a short confirmation that the cell now holds the new value.
Before you start
What you need
- A Google account with access to the Drive files you want to use
- A Google Cloud project with the Drive, Sheets, and Docs APIs turned on
- A Client ID and Client Secret from Google (these are like app passwords you create in the Google Cloud Console)
- Node.js installed on your computer to run the helper
Good to know
It can change the contents of your Google Sheets, so double check any edit before you accept it, and it can read any Drive file your Google account can see.
Install it with your AI
Add Google Drive MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Google Drive MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who keeps documents and spreadsheets in Google Drive and wants to ask their AI about them without copying and pasting.
