Kybase MCP server
by Kyrzin
Give your AI a long-term memory: notes it can search, read and update, stored on your own machine.
Kybase is a notes app that lives on your own computer and also acts as memory for your AI. You write and edit notes in a browser, and your AI can search them, read them and add to them when you ask. It is handy if you keep explaining the same things to your AI over and over and want those answers to stick around.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. It forgets everything the moment the session ends. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something outside the chat. Kybase is that helper here: it connects your AI to your own notes, so the AI can look things up in them and write back when you ask.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question, like what you decided about a staging database. The AI uses this helper to search your Kybase notes. Kybase looks through the notes and finds the matching part, down to the section, not just the whole file. The AI reads that part and answers you. If you want, the AI can also add a new note or append a line to an existing one, so next time the answer is already there.
What you can do with it
- Search your notes by wording or by meaning
- Read just one section of a long note
- Add a new note with what your AI just learned
- Append a line to an existing note
- Link related notes together with [[wikilinks]]
- List notes and see what links to what
- Export everything as plain Markdown files
Try asking your AI
- “What did we decide about the staging database?”
- “Search my notes for the rollback steps and read that section”
- “Add a note about how our deploy process works”
- “Append today's decision to the Staging environment note”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat, written in normal sentences, often with the note and section name so you know where it came from. When the AI writes something, it tells you which note it changed. You can always open the same note in the browser and edit it by hand if the wording is off.
Before you start
What you need
- Node.js 18 or newer if you use the simple npx setup
- Docker if you want the full app with the web page and graph view
- A KYBASE_SECRET, which is a password you generate yourself
- An embedding provider for meaning-based search: Ollama on your machine, or a Google or OpenAI key
Good to know
It can change and delete your notes, so keep backups, and if you pick Google or OpenAI for search your note text is sent to them.
Install it with your AI
Add Kybase MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Kybase MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
People who work with an AI every day and are tired of repeating the same background facts, especially developers, writers and anyone keeping project notes.
