LoreDocs MCP server
Give your AI a searchable, versioned vault of your project docs so it remembers context between sessions.
LoreDocs is a local knowledge base for your project documents. It stores specs, guides, and reference notes in named vaults that your AI can search and load into the conversation. It is handy if you keep explaining the same project background to your AI over and over.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you and read what you paste in. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. Here, the helper connects your AI to LoreDocs, a local store of your project documents. When you ask about your architecture doc or a team playbook, the AI can look it up in LoreDocs and bring it into the conversation.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like find the architecture doc or load the team playbook. The AI uses the LoreDocs helper to search your vaults or pull documents by tag. LoreDocs reads from a database and folder on your own computer. The AI then shows you the matching content or uses it to answer your question. You can also ask it to save new docs, update old ones, or keep a version history.
What you can do with it
- Create vaults to group docs by project or topic
- Search all your vaults by keyword or tag
- Load a vault summary or specific docs into the chat
- Add, update, and version documents
- Import a whole folder of files at once
- Export documents or a manifest to disk
- Restore an earlier version of a document
Try asking your AI
- “Create a vault for this project and add the spec I just wrote.”
- “Find the architecture decision doc and summarize it.”
- “Load everything tagged team-playbook into context.”
- “Show me the version history for the onboarding guide.”
What it gives back to you
You get back lists of vaults or documents, search results with titles and snippets, or the full text of a document loaded into the chat. When you ask it to save or update something, it confirms the change and keeps a version history. You can also get summaries of what is in a vault.
Before you start
What you need
- The uv package manager installed on your computer
- Claude Code, Cowork, Cursor, Codex, or Hermes Agent
- A local folder for your vaults (LoreDocs creates ~/.loredocs automatically)
Good to know
It can delete vaults and documents permanently, so double-check before asking it to remove anything.
Install it with your AI
Add LoreDocs MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check LoreDocs MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
People who work on projects with an AI assistant and want it to remember specs, guides, and decisions across sessions without pasting them again.
