SQL Database MCP server
Lets your AI look inside your database: list tables, describe columns, and run queries for you.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to a database. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI things like which tables exist or what a table looks like, and it will go and check for you. It is handy for anyone who works with data but does not want to write SQL by hand every time.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one new skill, here the skill of talking to a database. This helper sits between your AI and your database, so when you ask a question, the AI can actually go and look things up instead of guessing. You do not need to understand how it works inside; you just connect it once and then ask questions in normal words.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question about your data, like which tables exist or what columns a table has. The AI sends that request to this helper program. The helper talks to your database using a standard connection called ODBC, and asks the database for the answer. The database sends back the information, and the helper passes it to your AI. Your AI then shows you the result in the chat, as a list, a table, or a short answer.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- List all the schemas in your database
- List the tables inside a schema
- Describe a table, including its columns and data types
- Find tables whose names contain a word you choose
- Run a SQL query and see the results as a table
- Run a SQL query and get the results as structured data
- Run special Virtuoso queries like SPARQL or SPASQL
Try asking your AI
- “What schemas are in my database?”
- “Show me all the tables in the Demo schema.”
- “Describe the structure of the orders table.”
- “Find all tables that have the word customer in their name.”
- “Run this query and show me the results as a table: SELECT * FROM customers LIMIT 10”
What it gives back to you
You get answers right in the chat. Sometimes it is a simple list, like the names of your tables. Sometimes it is a table with rows and columns, which is easy to read. For queries, you can ask for the results as a neat table or as structured data, depending on what you need.
Before you start
What you need
- A database you can connect to, with its address and login details
- The ODBC driver for your database installed on your computer
- An entry in your ODBC settings file that names the connection (called a DSN)
- The uv tool installed, which is used to run this helper
Good to know
This helper can run any query you or your AI send, including ones that change or delete data, so be careful with what you ask it to do on a live database.
Install it with your AI
Add SQL Database MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check SQL Database MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who works with a database and wants to explore or query it using plain words instead of writing SQL, especially analysts, support staff, and people doing data checks.
