Opensolr MCP server

by phpcip

Give your AI managed search: keyword plus meaning search, add documents, and get grounded answers.

This is a helper that connects your AI to Opensolr, a hosted search service built on Apache Solr. Once connected, your AI can search an index, add documents to it, and answer questions using what it finds there. It is handy if you want your AI to look things up in your own collection of pages, articles or files instead of guessing.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to Opensolr, so it can search your indexes, add documents and pull grounded answers when you ask. You do not need to set up any search engine yourself; the helper talks to Opensolr for you.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something in plain words. The AI uses this helper to send your request to Opensolr. Opensolr searches your index using both exact words and meaning, so it can find a page even when you use different words. It can also add new documents to your index and wait for them to become searchable. Then the AI brings back the matching items, or a short answer built only from what it found.

What you can do with it

  • Search an index using keywords, meaning, or both together
  • Search with a photo by reading its labels, printed text and barcodes
  • Get a short answer grounded in the top search results
  • Add plain text documents with metadata to an index
  • Delete documents from an index by their id
  • List your indexes and check details about one
  • Create a new vector-enabled index in a chosen region

Try asking your AI

  • “Search the news index for how to save money and give me the top five results”
  • “Add these FAQ answers to a new index called faq and then find everything about refunds”
  • “Use this photo of a shelf to find matching products in the catalog index”
  • “Ask the index what the warranty says about solar inverters and answer only from those documents”

What it gives back to you

You get back a list of matching items with their titles, short descriptions and scores, shown right in the chat. For an answer request, you get a short written answer that is built only from the documents found. When you add or delete documents, you get a confirmation and a job status you can check. You can also ask for a list of your indexes or details about one index.

Before you start

What you need
