Local AI MCP server (Ollama & vLLM)

by setheerwagen

Ask a model running on your own computer to write, summarize, classify, or pull out structured data.

This is a small helper that lets your AI assistant talk to a language model running on your own computer instead of in the cloud. You install it once, point it at your local Ollama or vLLM setup, and then your AI can hand off writing, summarizing, and sorting tasks to that local model. It is handy if you already run a local model and want your AI assistant to use it for language work.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using the brain it was given. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something outside the chat. This particular helper connects your AI to a language model running on your own machine, so the AI can send it writing or sorting jobs and get answers back. You stay in the chat; the helper quietly does the handoff.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI to write something, summarize a block of text, sort items into categories, or pull out details into a clean list. Your AI passes that job to this helper. The helper sends it to the local model you configured, either Ollama or vLLM. The local model does the language work and sends an answer back. The helper checks that the answer matches the shape you asked for, and if it does not, it tries again automatically before handing the result to your AI.

What you can do with it

  • Ask a local model to write or rewrite text
  • Summarize long passages without leaving your machine
  • Sort items into categories you define
  • Pull structured data out of messy text
  • Get answers in a fixed format your tools can read
  • Run language jobs with no file or tool access for the model

Try asking your AI

  • “Summarize this meeting transcript in five bullet points using my local model”
  • “Classify these customer messages as billing, technical, or other”
  • “Extract the names, dates, and amounts from this invoice text into a table”
  • “Rewrite this paragraph in a friendlier tone”

What it gives back to you

You get the local model's answer back in your chat, usually as plain text or as a small structured block like a list or table. If you asked for a specific shape, the helper checks the answer matches it before showing it to you. If the first attempt does not fit, it quietly tries again. You see the final result, not the retries.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python 3.10 or newer
  • A local Ollama or vLLM instance running and reachable on your machine
  • The mcp-ollama-vllm package installed with pip

Good to know

The AI assistant you drive this with is usually a cloud service, so what you type and the results still pass through that provider even though the model itself runs locally.

Install it with your AI

Add Local AI MCP server (Ollama & vLLM) to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
