Galley MCP server
by vitofico
Let your AI read your Galley Typst project, check real compile errors, and suggest edits you accept or reject.
Galley is a writing app for Typst documents that runs mostly in your browser. This MCP server is a small bridge that lets an AI assistant you already use, like Claude Code or Codex, look at your Galley project and suggest changes. It is handy if you write reports, papers, or long documents in Typst and want help fixing them without handing over control.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app. This one connects your AI to Galley, your Typst editor. Once connected, the AI can read your live document, check the real Typst errors, and propose edits for you to review.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI to help with your Galley document. The AI uses this helper to look at your live project, including the file tree and the parts of files that matter for your question. It also runs a real Typst check, so it sees the actual errors, not guesses. Then it writes a suggested edit as a review card in Galley. You read the suggestion and click Accept or Reject. Nothing changes in your document until you accept.
What you can do with it
- Read your live Galley document and file tree
- Check real Typst compile errors and warnings
- Pull relevant excerpts from across your project files
- Propose edits as a review card for you to accept or reject
- Propose new files or changes across several files
- Ask to open a project from your library, with your confirmation
- List your Galley library when control mode is on
Try asking your AI
- “Look at my Galley project and tell me why the compile is failing”
- “Fix the broken references in main.typ and propose the edit”
- “Summarize what this document says and suggest a shorter intro”
- “Find all places where I use the wrong heading level and propose fixes”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in your AI chat, like a summary of the errors or an explanation of what is wrong. Inside Galley, you get a review card showing the suggested change as a diff. You can read it, then click Accept to apply it or Reject to throw it away. The AI never changes your document on its own.
Before you start
What you need
- Galley running on your machine (the browser app)
- A room id from sharing your project in Galley
- An AI coding agent that supports MCP, like Claude Code or Codex
- Node.js and pnpm to install the Galley MCP kernel
Good to know
The agent can read your document and your project files, so only connect it to projects you are comfortable sharing with your AI provider.
Install it with your AI
Add Galley MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Galley MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Writers, students, researchers, and anyone who writes Typst documents and already uses an AI coding agent.
