Google Docs MCP server
by A1-x-Tech
Let your AI read, summarize, edit and comment on your Google Docs without leaving the chat.
This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Google Docs. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to read a document, summarize it, rewrite a paragraph, fix the formatting or work through comments. It is handy for anyone who lives in shared documents, like project notes, meeting minutes or team handbooks.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot see your files or change them. An MCP server is a little helper program that gives your AI one new skill. This helper gives your AI a connection to Google Docs, so it can look inside your documents and make edits for you when you ask.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something about a Google Doc, like a summary or a small change. Your AI sends that request to this helper. The helper talks to Google Docs using your Google account, does the reading or editing, and sends the result back. Your AI then shows you the answer or tells you what it changed. For edits, it usually shows you the exact text it plans to replace and waits for your confirmation first.
What you can do with it
- Read a document and summarize it in plain words
- Replace one exact paragraph or find and replace text
- Turn paragraphs into headings, lists or tables
- Add or reply to comments and mark threads resolved
- Create a new document from Markdown text
- Export a document to Markdown, PDF or DOCX
- Show the structure of a document, including its tabs
Try asking your AI
- “Read the launch plan document and summarize its open comment threads.”
- “Rewrite the Timeline paragraph to say the beta starts on March 3.”
- “Create a meeting-notes document from this Markdown text.”
- “Export the spec as Markdown and save the contract as a PDF.”
What it gives back to you
You get back plain answers in the chat: summaries, lists of headings, comment threads, or the text of a section. When it edits, it tells you what it changed, like which paragraph was replaced. Exports produce a file on your computer, such as a PDF or Markdown file. It can also show you a proposed change first and wait for your yes before touching the document.
Before you start
What you need
- A Google account
- Node.js 20 or newer installed on your computer
- A Google Cloud project with the Google Docs API turned on and a Desktop app OAuth client (the helper walks you through this in the chat)
- Your AI app that supports MCP servers, like Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code or Codex
Good to know
It can change and delete parts of your Google Docs and comments, so read the proposed change before you confirm, and keep backups of important documents.
Install it with your AI
Add Google Docs MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Google Docs MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,210 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who works with shared Google Docs, like project managers, writers, team leads and assistants who want quick summaries and small edits without opening the document.
