Jira MCP server

by aashari

Connect your AI to Jira so it can look up projects, issues, and comments, and even add comments for you.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Jira, the tool many teams use to track tasks, bugs, and projects. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI questions about your Jira work in normal words instead of clicking around. It is handy for developers, project managers, team leads, and anyone who spends part of their day in Jira.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another app. This one connects your AI to Jira Cloud, so it can look things up and make changes there when you ask. You stay in charge: the AI only does what you tell it to do.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question about your Jira work, like which issues are still open. The AI passes that request to this helper program running on your computer. The helper signs in to Jira using your own account and asks Jira for the information. Jira sends the answer back, and the helper hands it to your AI. Your AI then shows you a tidy list or summary right in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • List the Jira projects you have access to
  • Show details of a specific issue, including its comments
  • Search for issues with filters like priority, status, or assignee
  • Add a comment to an issue
  • Create a new issue such as a bug or task
  • Update fields on an existing issue
  • Delete a comment or other item when you ask

Try asking your AI

  • “List all projects I have access to in Jira”
  • “Show me details about issue PROJ-123 including its comments”
  • “Find all high priority issues assigned to me that are in progress”
  • “Add a comment to PROJ-456 saying the code review is done and it is ready for testing”

What it gives back to you

You get back plain answers in the chat: lists of projects or issues, details of a single issue, comments, or a short summary of what changed. When you ask it to add a comment or create an issue, it tells you that the action was done. Very large answers are shortened automatically, and the full version is saved to a file on your computer if you need it.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Jira Cloud account (this does not work with older on-premise Jira Server)
  • Your Jira site name, which is the first part of your Jira web address, for example mycompany from mycompany.atlassian.net
  • The email address you use to sign in to Jira
  • A Jira API token, which is a kind of password for apps; you create one for free on the Atlassian website

Good to know

This helper can also change or delete things in Jira, so double-check before you tell your AI to create, update, or remove anything.

Install it with your AI

Add Jira MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Jira MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
