Mailwarden is a small helper program that connects your AI assistant to your real Gmail mailbox. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI in plain words to find, sort, clean up or snooze emails, and it will actually do it in Gmail. It is handy if your inbox is a mess and you would rather describe what you want than click around.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot see your email or change anything in it. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill, in this case a connection to your Gmail mailbox. Mailwarden is that helper: when you ask your AI something about your mail, the AI passes your request to mailwarden, and mailwarden talks to Gmail for you.

What this MCP server does

You type a request to your AI, like find unread mail from my bank or archive everything from this newsletter. Your AI sends that request to mailwarden, which is running quietly on your own computer. Mailwarden then talks directly to the live Gmail service, not a stale copy, and checks what is really in your mailbox. It can search, read, label, archive, trash, download attachments and snooze threads until a date you choose. Then it hands the result back to your AI, which explains it to you in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • Search your mailbox with normal Gmail search terms and get only real matches
  • Read a whole email thread, including sender verification details
  • Add or remove labels on one thread or on thousands at once
  • Archive or move threads out of your inbox in bulk
  • Move threads to trash without permanently deleting them
  • Download attachments from a message to your computer
  • Snooze a thread so it leaves your inbox now and comes back on a date you pick

Try asking your AI

  • “Find all unread emails from the last week and show me a summary”
  • “Archive every thread with the label Newsletters”
  • “Snooze this thread until next Monday morning”
  • “Download the attachment from the latest invoice email”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat: lists of matching threads with sender, subject and date, short summaries of what a thread says, and confirmation of changes it made, like archived 42 threads or added label Receipts. For attachments, it saves the file to a folder you allow and tells you where it went. If something fails, it tells you in plain words whether you can retry or need to reconnect your account.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Google account with Gmail
  • Permission from Google to let mailwarden read and manage your mail (you approve this once in your browser)
  • Node.js installed on your computer, version 18 or newer
  • The Claude desktop app or another AI client that supports MCP servers

Good to know

It can change your mailbox, so anything it archives, labels or trashes should be reviewed, and it will never send mail for you by design.
