ChatGPT MCP server (by HasData)

by HasData

Ask ChatGPT a question from your AI and get the answer plus the web pages it used.

This is a small helper that lets your AI assistant ask ChatGPT a question for you and bring back the answer. You do not need an OpenAI account or a key. It is handy if you want a second opinion or a quick answer with sources, without leaving the chat you are already in.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another service. This one connects your AI to ChatGPT, so when you ask, your AI can send the question over and read back what ChatGPT answered. You stay in your own chat the whole time; the helper does the running around.

What this MCP server does

You type a question in your normal AI chat, like you always do. Your AI passes that question to this helper, which sends it to ChatGPT anonymously through HasData. ChatGPT writes an answer and, if it looked things up, a list of the web pages it used. The helper brings the answer back as formatted text, with the sources listed, and your AI shows it to you in the chat. Every request is a fresh conversation, so ChatGPT does not remember your last question.

What you can do with it

  • Ask ChatGPT a question and read its answer without leaving your chat
  • See which web pages ChatGPT used for its answer
  • Ask the same question in another language and get the answer in that language
  • Ask about something recent and get a current answer with sources
  • Run the same question a few times to compare the answers
  • Check whether ChatGPT actually searched the web or answered from memory

Try asking your AI

  • “Ask ChatGPT what the current state of the Artemis program is, and list the sources it used.”
  • “Ask ChatGPT what happened in AI this week, with Berlin as the current date.”
  • “Ask ChatGPT the same question in German.”
  • “Ask ChatGPT to explain what a mortgage escrow account is, in plain words.”

What it gives back to you

You get ChatGPT's answer as formatted text you can read right in the chat. Along with it comes a list of the web pages ChatGPT consulted, each with a title and a web address. You also see the model that answered and whether a web search was used. If ChatGPT answered from memory alone, there may be no sources at all.

Before you start

What you need

  • An MCP client, such as the Claude desktop app, Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code
  • A free HasData account and API key from their dashboard (a kind of password for apps; the site gives you one for free, no card needed)

Good to know

Each successful call spends 10 credits from your HasData account, and the free tier gives you 1,000 credits a month, so about 100 questions.

Install it with your AI

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
