Loci second brain MCP server

by IvenKooLab

Let your AI search all your scattered notes, docs and PDFs and answer with citations.

Loci is a helper that turns your messy pile of notes, documents, PDFs and chat exports into something your AI can actually search. You install it on your own computer, point it at your files, and then ask questions in plain language. It is handy for anyone who has years of notes in different places and can never find the right one.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something else. This one, Loci, connects your AI to your own collection of notes and documents. Once it is connected, your AI can look things up in your files and bring back answers with the exact sections they came from.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question, like where you wrote about a certain project. Your AI passes that question to Loci. Loci searches your notes, docs, PDFs and chat exports using two search methods at once, then blends the results so the best matches come first. It hands the matching sections back to your AI, along with where each one came from. Your AI then writes you an answer and shows the citations so you can check them yourself.

What you can do with it

  • Search across notes, documents, PDFs and chat exports in one go
  • Get answers with section-level citations so you can see the source
  • Ask for a claim-by-claim check that verifies each statement against your files
  • Explore how your notes link to each other, Obsidian style
  • Run everything locally so your files stay on your machine
  • Use a cloud AI service you already have, or run fully offline

Try asking your AI

  • “What did I write about the pricing change last year?”
  • “Find every note where I mentioned the Johnson project and summarize them.”
  • “Which of my documents talk about onboarding, and what do they say?”
  • “Check whether my summary of the Q3 report is actually supported by the file.”

What it gives back to you

You get a written answer in the chat, plus a list of the sections it came from, with the file name and the part of the document used. If you ask for verification, you also get a breakdown of each claim and whether your files back it up. It does not change or delete your files. It only reads them and reports back.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python installed on your computer
  • Your notes, docs, PDFs or chat exports saved somewhere on your machine
  • Either an OpenAI-compatible API key (a kind of password for AI services) or Ollama installed for fully offline use

Good to know

It reads your personal files, so only point it at folders you are comfortable having searched, and keep in mind that answers depend on what is actually in those files.

Install it with your AI

Add Loci second brain MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
