OpenProject MCP server
by jtauschl
Lets your AI read and manage your OpenProject projects, tasks and time entries for you.
This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to OpenProject, the tool teams use to plan projects and track tasks. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI in plain words to look up tasks, add comments, log time or create new items, and it does the clicking for you. It is made for people who use OpenProject Community Edition and want less manual copying and pasting.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot see your OpenProject account or change anything in it. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one new skill, here a connection to OpenProject. You install it once on your computer, tell it your OpenProject address and a kind of password, and from then on your AI can look things up and make changes there when you ask.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something about your OpenProject work, like which tasks are still open or what you did last week. Your AI passes that request to this helper program running quietly on your computer. The helper talks to OpenProject using its official connection, gathers the answer, and hands it back. Your AI then shows it to you in the chat as a short list or summary. If you ask it to change something, the helper first shows you a preview of exactly what it would do, and only does it after you say yes.
What you can do with it
- List and search your projects and work packages
- Create, update or delete work packages and subtasks
- Add comments and attachments to tasks
- Log, change or remove time entries
- Create and manage boards, versions and memberships
- Read wiki pages, news and notifications
- Manage user accounts and group members
Try asking your AI
- “What work packages are assigned to me this week?”
- “Add a comment to task 123 saying the design is approved”
- “Log 2 hours on the website redesign task for today”
- “Show me all open bugs in the mobile app project”
What it gives back to you
You get short, tidy answers in the chat: lists of tasks with the few fields that matter, summaries of what is open or overdue, or a preview of a change before it happens. When the helper makes a change, it tells you what it did. It keeps answers small on purpose so your AI does not get flooded with information.
Before you start
What you need
- An OpenProject Community Edition account
- An OpenProject API token (a kind of password for apps; you create one in your OpenProject profile settings)
- pipx installed on your computer to install the helper
- The name of the project or projects you want your AI to be allowed to see
Good to know
It can change and delete real project data, so always read the preview it shows before you confirm a write.
Install it with your AI
Add OpenProject MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check OpenProject MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,361 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Project managers, team leads and anyone who spends part of their day updating tasks and time in OpenProject.
