Obsidian Everywhere is a helper that connects your AI assistant to your Obsidian vault, the folder of notes on your own computer. It lets the AI search your notes, follow the links between them, and make careful edits when you ask. It is handy if you keep a lot of notes in Obsidian and want your AI to actually use them instead of guessing.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app. This one connects your AI to your Obsidian vault, so it can look things up and make changes there when you ask. You run it yourself, and your notes stay on your machine.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question about your notes. The AI passes that request to this helper program. The helper reads your vault files, builds a searchable index, and follows the links between notes. Then it sends back the matching notes, their connections, or a tidy summary, and shows it to you in the chat. If you ask for a change, it can edit notes too, with safety steps in place.

What you can do with it

  • Search your notes by words, tags, or folders
  • See which notes link to a note and which notes it links to
  • Find notes that are related but not yet linked
  • Read a note's content, tags, and properties
  • Create, append to, move, rename, or delete notes
  • Bulk update tags or properties across a folder, with a dry run first
  • Check Git status, diffs, and history if you turn that on

Try asking your AI

  • “Find all my notes about project planning and summarize the main ideas”
  • “What notes link to my note called Weekly Review?”
  • “Add the tag #idea to my note called New App Concept”
  • “Show me notes that mention budgeting but are not linked to my Finance note”

What it gives back to you

You get back lists of notes, short summaries, matching sentences, and the links between notes. For edits, you see what was changed and where. If you ask for a context bundle, it returns a focused set of notes packed to fit a size limit. Everything appears as normal text in your chat.

Before you start

What you need

  • Obsidian installed with a vault of notes on your computer
  • Node.js 18 or newer
  • The Claude desktop app or another MCP-compatible AI app

Good to know

It can change or delete notes, so review edits before approving them, and bulk changes are safer with the dry-run option first.
