Reflex code search MCP server

by reflex-search

Lets your AI search your codebase offline for symbols, references, and dependencies.

Reflex is a local search tool for code. It builds an index of your project on your own computer, then answers questions about it fast, without sending anything to the cloud. It is handy if you work with a large codebase and want your AI assistant to find things in it.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something else. This one connects your AI to Reflex, a search engine that runs on your machine and knows your code. Once connected, your AI can look things up in your project when you ask, instead of guessing.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question about your code, like where a function is defined or what uses a file. Your AI calls Reflex through this helper. Reflex looks in its local index of your project and finds the matching lines, symbols, or imports. The answer comes back into your chat as a list with file names and line numbers. You do not have to run any search command yourself.

What you can do with it

  • Find where a function, class, or variable is defined
  • List every place a symbol is used across the project
  • See what a file imports, and what imports it
  • Spot circular dependencies and unused files
  • Search with plain text, whole words, or patterns
  • Count matches without pulling in all the file content
  • Get a quick summary of your project structure

Try asking your AI

  • “Where is the function extract_symbols defined?”
  • “Find every place CacheManager is used in this project”
  • “What does src/main.rs import?”
  • “Are there any circular dependencies in this codebase?”

What it gives back to you

You get back lists of file paths with line numbers, short snippets of the matching code, and counts. Sometimes it returns a summary, like the most-imported files or the imports of one file. The results appear right in your chat as text you can read. If nothing matches, it often tells you why, such as the word being part of a longer name.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 18 or newer, or Rust if you install with Cargo
  • A project folder on your computer to index
  • An MCP-compatible AI tool, such as Claude Code or Cursor

Good to know

It reads your project files and builds a local index, so make sure you are comfortable with the tool seeing that code, and keep the .reflex folder out of version control.

Install it with your AI

Add Reflex code search MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Reflex code search MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
