by tacticlaunch

Let your AI read and update your Linear issues, projects, and documents for you.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “What is on my plate in Linear today?”, the Linear MCP server connects it to Linear, and you get back answers in your chat.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Linear, the tool many teams use to track tasks and projects. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI in plain words to look things up in Linear or make changes there. It is handy if you spend a lot of your day in Linear and want to skip some clicking around.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill, in this case a connection to Linear. You install it once, give it a key to your Linear account, and from then on your AI can look things up in Linear or do things there when you ask. Think of it as giving your AI a login to Linear so it can run errands for you.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about your Linear work, like what is on your plate today. Your AI passes that request to this helper program. The helper signs in to Linear with your key and fetches or changes what you asked for. Then it hands the result back to your AI, which explains it to you in the chat. You never have to open Linear yourself unless you want to.

What you can do with it

  • List your open Linear issues and filter them by team or project
  • Create a new issue with a title, team, and description
  • Change the status of an issue, for example to In Progress
  • Assign an issue to a teammate
  • Add a comment to an issue
  • Summarize a project's status or recent updates
  • Find and summarize documents attached to a project

Try asking your AI

  • “Show me all my open Linear issues for this week”
  • “Create a new issue called Fix login bug in the Frontend team”
  • “Change the status of issue FE-123 to In Progress and assign it to John Smith”
  • “Draft a weekly project update based on the current Linear state”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat, like a list of issues with their titles, statuses, and assignees. If you asked for a summary, you get a short write-up. If you asked it to change something, it tells you what it changed. You can also ask it to pull up a document and summarize the key points.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Linear account
  • A Linear personal API key (a kind of password for apps; Linear gives you one for free in your settings)
  • An AI assistant that supports MCP, like Claude Desktop or Cursor

Good to know

This helper can create and change things in your Linear account, like issues, comments, and project updates, so double-check before you let it make changes.

Install it with your AI

Add Linear MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Linear MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
