This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Tavily, a web search service built for AI tools. Once it is set up, you can just ask your AI to look something up, and it will go search the web for you. It is handy for anyone who wants current information, like today's events, news, or prices, without opening a browser.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another service. This one connects your AI to Tavily, a web search service. So when you ask a question that needs fresh information, your AI can reach out through this helper and bring back real search results.

What this MCP server does

You type a question in your AI chat, like asking about events happening today. Your AI sends that question to this helper program. The helper passes it to the Tavily search service, which looks across the web. Tavily sends back an AI-written answer plus a list of links and titles. Your AI then shows you that answer and those links right in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • Search the web for current news and events
  • Get an AI-written summary answer to your question
  • See a list of source links and titles
  • Choose a basic or more detailed search
  • Ask follow-up questions using the results you got back

Try asking your AI

  • “Please search for today's events in Kamakura”
  • “Search the web for the latest news about electric cars”
  • “Look up the current price of a Nintendo Switch”
  • “Find recent articles about healthy sleep habits”

What it gives back to you

You get a written answer from Tavily, followed by a list of search results with titles and web addresses. It all appears as text in your chat, so you can read it and click the links. There is no file to download, just the answer and the sources.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Tavily account and API key (a kind of password for apps; Tavily gives you one when you sign up)
  • The Claude desktop app, or another tool that supports MCP servers
  • The uv tool installed on your computer

Good to know

It sends your search question to the Tavily service over the internet, so avoid typing anything private or sensitive into your searches.
