Pandoc document converter
by vivekVells
Lets your AI turn documents into other formats, like Markdown to PDF or Word to HTML.

This is a small helper that connects your AI to Pandoc, a well known free tool for changing documents from one format to another. You ask your AI to convert a file, and it does the work for you. It is handy for anyone who keeps getting files in the wrong format and does not want to learn a command line tool.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another tool. This one connects your AI to Pandoc, the document conversion engine. Once it is set up, your AI can take a file you have and turn it into a different format for you.
What this MCP server does
You tell your AI what you want, for example to turn a Markdown file into a Word document. Your AI passes that request to this helper. The helper runs Pandoc behind the scenes to do the actual conversion. Then it hands the result back, either as text in the chat or as a saved file at the path you gave it. For some formats like PDF, Word, or PowerPoint, you need to tell it exactly where to save the file.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Convert Markdown notes into a PDF or Word document
- Turn an HTML page into plain text
- Change a Word document into Markdown
- Save a chat answer as a DOCX or PDF file
- Convert a Markdown file into an EPUB ebook
- Make a PowerPoint file from Markdown slides
- Apply a template so the output matches your company style
Try asking your AI
- “Convert my notes.md file to a PDF and save it as /Users/me/Documents/notes.pdf”
- “Turn this text into a Word document and save it as /Users/me/report.docx”
- “Convert /Users/me/page.html to Markdown and show me the result”
- “Make a PowerPoint from slides.md using template.pptx as the style and save it as deck.pptx”
What it gives back to you
For simple formats like Markdown, HTML, or plain text, it shows the converted content right in the chat so you can read or copy it. For bigger formats like PDF, Word, or PowerPoint, it saves a file on your computer at the path you gave it. Then it tells you the file was created and where it is. You open that file with your normal apps.
Before you start
What you need
- The Pandoc program installed on your computer (free, from pandoc.org)
- The uv tool installed (it includes the uvx command that runs this server)
- TeX Live installed only if you want to make PDFs
- The Claude desktop app or another AI app that supports MCP servers
Good to know
It reads and writes files on your computer, so only point it at folders you are happy for your AI to touch, and double check the save path before you run it.
Install it with your AI
Add Pandoc document converter to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Pandoc document converter, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who works with documents all day and keeps needing them in a different format, like writers, students, researchers, and office staff.
