This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to DuckDuckGo, the search engine that does not track you. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to look something up online and it will actually search for you instead of guessing. It is handy for anyone who wants fresh information from the web without leaving the chat.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to DuckDuckGo search, so when you ask a question, the AI can go look it up on the web and come back with real results. You do not have to open a browser or copy links around yourself.

What this MCP server does

You type a question or a topic into your AI chat. The AI passes your words to this helper as a search query. The helper sends that query to DuckDuckGo and waits for the answer. DuckDuckGo sends back a list of matching web pages, and the helper tidies them into a clean list. Your AI then shows you those results in the chat, usually as titles, links, and short snippets.

What you can do with it

  • Search the web for a topic, question, or news item
  • Ask for a specific number of results, from 1 up to 20
  • Set how strict the safe search filter should be
  • Get results as a tidy list with titles, links, and snippets
  • Look things up mid-conversation without leaving the chat

What it gives back to you

You get back a formatted list of search results, usually with a title, a link, and a short description for each one. The AI can then read through them and summarise the answer for you. Everything shows up right in the chat, so you can keep the conversation going. It does not change anything on your computer or in your accounts.

Before you start

What you need

  • The Claude desktop app (or another AI app that supports MCP servers)
  • Node.js version 18 or newer installed on your computer

Good to know

DuckDuckGo limits this helper to about one search per second and 15000 searches per month, so very heavy use may slow down or stop working.
