Obsidian MCP server

by bitbonsai

Let your AI read, search and edit the notes in your Obsidian vault when you ask it to.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Read my note called project-ideas.md”, on your own computer the Obsidian MCP server works with obsidian vault, and you get back the note content or a confirmation.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to your Obsidian notes. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to look things up in your vault or make changes to your notes for you. It is handy if you keep your ideas, projects or research in Obsidian and want your AI to work with them directly.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to your Obsidian vault, which is just a folder of notes on your computer. Once connected, your AI can look things up in that folder or make changes there when you ask.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about your notes, like reading one or searching for a word. The AI passes your request to this helper program. The helper opens your Obsidian vault folder and does the work, such as reading a note, searching across files, or writing new content. Then it sends the result back, and your AI shows it to you in the chat. Obsidian itself does not need to be open for this to work.

What you can do with it

  • Read any note in your vault and show its content
  • Search your notes for words or phrases you mention
  • Create new notes with a title, date or tags
  • Append or prepend text to an existing note
  • Add, list or remove tags on your notes
  • List the files and folders inside your vault
  • Move or delete notes (with a confirmation step)

Try asking your AI

  • “What files are in my Obsidian vault?”
  • “Read my note called project-ideas.md”
  • “Create a new note called meeting-notes.md with today's date”
  • “Add the tags project and urgent to my task note”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in plain chat text: the content of a note, a list of files, a list of tags, or a short message saying a change was made. For searches, it gives you the matching notes and the relevant lines. When it writes or edits, it tells you what it did, like which note was updated and in which mode.

Before you start

What you need

  • The Node.js program installed on your computer (version 20 or newer, free from nodejs.org)
  • An Obsidian vault, which is just a folder of your notes on your computer
  • An AI app that supports MCP, such as Claude Desktop or Claude Code

Good to know

It can change, move or delete notes in your vault, so it is worth keeping a backup or using the read-only option if you are unsure.

Install it with your AI
