Proton Safe MCP server
by fbossiere
Let your AI read, search and draft Proton Mail emails, with no ability to send anything.
This is a small helper program that connects your AI assistant to your Proton Mail account, through the official Proton Mail Bridge on your own computer. It lets the AI look through your mailbox, open messages, peek inside PDF and CSV attachments, and prepare draft emails for you. It is handy if you want help dealing with a busy inbox but you still want the final say on what actually goes out.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives it a new skill or a connection to another app. This one gives your AI a connection to your Proton Mail account, so it can search and read your messages and prepare drafts when you ask. It does that by talking to Proton Mail Bridge, a free official Proton tool that runs on your own machine.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something about your mailbox, like find emails from a client last week. The AI passes that request to this helper program, which talks to Proton Mail Bridge on your computer. Bridge fetches the matching messages from your Proton account, and the helper sends the results back to the AI. Your AI then shows you a summary or the text in the chat. If you want a reply, it can prepare a draft in Proton Mail for you to review and send yourself.
What you can do with it
- Search your inbox for messages by keyword or sender
- Read a specific email and summarise it for you
- List your folders and show how many messages are in your inbox
- Extract the text inside PDF, TXT and CSV attachments so the AI can read it
- Suggest reply recipients and a subject line for a reply
- Prepare a draft email, with attachments, ready for you to review
- Check that your Bridge connection is working
Try asking your AI
- “Search my inbox for anything from my accountant in the last month and summarise it”
- “Read the latest email from the supplier and tell me what they are asking for”
- “Open the PDF attached to the invoice email and list the line items”
- “Draft a short reply to Sara confirming the meeting on Thursday, then I will review it”
What it gives back to you
You get plain answers in the chat: lists of matching emails with their subject, sender and date, or a summary of a message you asked about. When you ask it to open an attachment, it gives back the extracted text, not the file itself. For drafts, it tells you what it prepared and where to find it. Nothing is sent, moved or deleted, so the chat is mostly information and drafts waiting for your review.
Before you start
What you need
- A Proton plan that supports Proton Mail Bridge
- Proton Mail Bridge installed, signed in and running on the same computer (Linux for the released version)
- A working keyring on your computer, such as gnome-keyring, to store the Bridge password
- Python 3.11 or newer and the uv tool if you install it from the command line
Good to know
It can create drafts in your mailbox, so check the recipients and text before you press Send in Proton Mail; it cannot send, delete or move anything by itself.
Install it with your AI
Add Proton Safe MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Proton Safe MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Proton Mail users who get a lot of email and want an AI assistant to help sort, read and draft replies without ever sending on their behalf.
