Obsidian MCP server
by rps321321
Lets your AI read, search, and edit your Obsidian notes for you.

This is a helper that connects your AI assistant to your Obsidian vault, the folder where all your notes live. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to find notes, summarize them, add text, fix links, and more, without opening Obsidian yourself. It is handy for anyone who keeps a lot of notes and wants their AI to work with them directly.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. It cannot see your files or your apps. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something else. This one connects your AI to your Obsidian vault, so when you ask about your notes, the AI can go look things up or make changes there for you.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something about your notes, like finding a topic or adding a line. The AI uses this helper to look inside your Obsidian vault. The helper reads, searches, or edits the notes you asked about. Then it sends the result back to the AI, and the AI tells you what it found or what it changed. You never have to open Obsidian or copy text back and forth.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Search all your notes for words or phrases
- Read a whole note or just one section by its heading
- Create new notes or add text to existing ones
- Rename or move notes and fix the links inside them
- Find notes by tag or by frontmatter details
- List backlinks, outlinks, and orphan notes
- Read and edit Obsidian canvas files
Try asking your AI
- “Find all notes tagged project that I edited this week and summarize each one”
- “Add a Last reviewed heading with today's date to every note in my Atlas folder”
- “Show me any broken links in my vault and which note they are in”
- “What did I write in my daily note today, and add a new task at the bottom”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat, like a list of matching notes, a short summary, or a count of things found. If the AI changed something, it tells you which notes it edited and what it added. For searches, you often see the note names and a short snippet around your search words. For attachments, it can show images or files right in the chat.
Before you start
What you need
- The Obsidian app with at least one vault on your computer
- Node.js installed (the free program that runs this helper)
- The Claude desktop app or another AI app that supports MCP servers
Good to know
It can change, move, or delete notes in your vault, so check what your AI plans to do before saying yes, and keep backups of important notes.
Install it with your AI
Add Obsidian MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Obsidian MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
People who keep notes in Obsidian and want their AI to search, summarize, and update those notes for them.
