Vault Cortex MCP server
by aliasunder
Let your AI search, read, and write notes in your Obsidian vault, plus keep tasks and memory.

Vault Cortex is a helper that connects your AI assistant to your Obsidian vault. Once it is set up, your AI can search your notes, read them, and even add or change notes for you. It is handy if you keep your thoughts, projects, or research in Obsidian and want your AI to work with that same pile of notes.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. It cannot see your files or your apps. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one new skill or one new connection. Vault Cortex is that helper for Obsidian: it sits next to your vault and lets your AI look things up or make changes there when you ask.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question about your notes, like what you wrote about a project. Your AI sends that request to Vault Cortex. Vault Cortex searches your vault using both exact words and meaning, so it finds notes even when you used different wording. It sends the matching notes back to your AI, which reads them and answers you. If you ask it to, it can also write new notes or update existing ones in your vault.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Search your vault by keyword or by meaning
- Read a specific note or a whole folder of notes
- Create new notes and edit existing ones
- Look at your tasks and move them between statuses
- Complete a task, and let a repeating task create its next copy
- See which notes link to each other and find notes nothing links to
- Read non-note files like images, PDFs, and canvases
- Keep a dated memory of your views on a topic over time
Try asking your AI
- “What did I write about the Q3 launch plan?”
- “Add a note called Meeting notes for today with these bullet points”
- “Show me all my open tasks that are due this week”
- “What do I think about switching to a four day work week, and how has my view changed?”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in plain chat, built from your own notes. For searches, your AI shows the matching notes and often quotes the relevant lines. For tasks, you get a list grouped by status, date, or priority. When it writes or changes something, it tells you which note it touched so you can check it in Obsidian.
