Legwork MCP server
by kumarganduri
Your AI can find a tool on GitHub and install it safely, so it can do new jobs on your own files.
Legwork is a helper you add to your AI once. After that, when you ask for something your AI cannot do yet, it goes looking on GitHub for a small open-source tool, shows it to you, and installs it only if you say yes. It is handy for anyone who wants their AI to handle real files like audio, photos and PDFs without becoming technical.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot run programs or reach into your computer. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill. Legwork is that helper here: it connects your AI to GitHub, where it can find and set up tools for you. You stay in charge, because you approve each install.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI for something, like removing the background from a photo. Your AI does not have that skill, so it asks Legwork to search GitHub for a tool that does. Legwork shows you the repo it picked and asks for your approval. Once you approve, it checks the code, builds a working tool in a safe sandbox, tests it, and then uses it on your file. A minute or so later you get the result back in the chat.
What you can do with it
- Transcribe a voice memo, mp3 or video into text
- Remove the background from a photo
- Pull tables out of a PDF
- Make a QR code for a web address
- Extract text from scanned pages with OCR
- Read YouTube transcripts and download videos
- Run maths, unit conversions and CSV or DuckDB queries
Try asking your AI
- “Use Legwork to transcribe ~/Downloads/memo.m4a”
- “Use Legwork to remove the background from ~/Downloads/photo.jpg”
- “Use Legwork to pull the tables out of ~/Downloads/report.pdf”
- “Use Legwork to make a QR code for https://github.com/kumarganduri/legwork”
What it gives back to you
You get the result in your chat: text, a table, a chart, or a short answer. Files a tool makes, like a trimmed video or a QR code image, are copied to a folder called Legwork/outputs on your computer, and the reply tells you where. Images can also show up right in the chat. If something goes wrong, you get a plain message saying what happened.
Before you start
What you need
- A Mac or Linux computer (Windows is not supported directly)
- uv, a free tool you install once
- The Claude desktop app or another AI app that supports MCP servers
- On Linux, the bubblewrap sandbox program
Good to know
Installing a tool runs code from GitHub on your computer, so only approve repos you trust, and remember that the folders you allow stay readable by those tools.
Install it with your AI
Add Legwork MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Legwork MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Office workers and anyone who wants their AI to handle everyday files like audio, photos and PDFs without learning to code.
